One of my favorite cartoonists and inspirations passed away on April 7, 2007.

When I first started into the world of being a cartoonist, I was a newbie looking for mentors. The easiest way for me to find mentorship was on the shelves of my paperback library, where many volumes of B.C., Wizard of Id, Peanuts, Hagar, Hi & Lois and Beetle Bailey reside (among others). My morning routine would be to pick up a book and start reading . . . get in the mood, get surrounded by comic genius and get my “timing” down. . . then start thinking “what are the Muppets doing today?”  Once you’ve been inspired by Johnny Hart, Dik Brown, Mort Walker or Charles Schulz. . . thinking like a cartoonist becomes a lot easier.

The thing about Johnny Hart was always originality. Maybe that’s obvious because he was writing about cave people, and he’d have to be original to make us relate- but the scene setting- the characters, the creativity were uniquely his. Many thanks, Johnny Hart- from one of your biggest admirers. . .
